Lush

By Jonathan Day

Lush is a store you need to experience. Oftentimes people enter and question the staff if they sell scented candles. Of course they do not, but the pungent aromas that can be sensed a block away from the wherever it may be situated, give rise to the confusion among the uneducated masses. No candles. Lush sells soaps, bath products, shower products, hair products and skin products. I worked there this past Christmas as a temp and now feel that I have a complete right to pass judgement on the store in general and the products that I have tried.

Lush is all about the natural world, the natural produce and trying to keep the world as natural as possible. However at Christmas that goes out the door and lush focuses on it’s ready wrapped gifts that contain a small to large collection of products from the store. I found this a little hypocritical, but no matter how green and tree hugging they seem, they’re still a business and they still need to make themselves a but of cash. However your question is, “Should I shop at Lush?” Well that most certainly depends on what you want to shop for. Let me break it down for you.

Bath Products
Call them bath ballistics, bath bombs, whatever, the balls of fizzy fun that you throw in the bath. I’ve used a few in my day and I’ve come to the conclusion that the ones that lack a gimmick are the ones to go for. Go for the subtle scents, go for the ones that don’t have glitter or confetti inside them that ruin your bath. These will leave a nice scent on you and be overall more enjoyable as you soak. The bubble bars, for creating bubble baths I felt did indeed create plenty of bubbles, but once I saw the actual water I was sitting in, I was turned me off by the fact it looked like something you’d tie-dye in.

Shower Products
The Shower Jelly is not a gimmick. It is a very interesting product, not to be poked fun at. My only complaint is that you have to lather up before you get wet in any way or else the stuff will just slide off you down the drain and you will waste your money, it is a fun experience that really does need to be experienced.

Skin Products
I have a vodka based sea salt face scrub waiting to burn my eyes out in my drawer, but besides that the only other skin product I used was a fresh chocolate face mask that really doesn’t smell like fresh chocolate and upset my nostrils when I put it on my face. Yet I persevered through it and came out with skin that felt exactly the same as the skin I had before I put it on, bit of a miss with that one. Hopefully the scrub will renew my faith.

Two strange products that I will never be able to live without now that I have discovered them are massage bars and temple balms. I cannot recommend them more. The massage bars are solid massage oils which make them great moisturisers, great for muscles and great for massages! My favourite is a honey & white chocolate one, which if used in sensual massage could get things rather hot, steamy and seemingly delicious. The temple balms come in a variety of scents, each specifically designed to help a person with either, concentration, sleeping and even recovery from a hangover. Simply rubbed on pressure points you’ll find them working their magic in seconds. We’re all busy these days and the temple balms can really help you get through your day. Both these products last ages too, unlike the bath bombs which only get one use, much more bank for your buck for around the same price.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to sample their hair products. One of my co-workers turned to me on my last day of work and said, “No, they really work”, which shows how much we had to flog the Lush produce as if they were the best products out there. Such is the life of a salesperson I suppose, but I digress. Without my 50% work discount I’ll have to really confident in a lush product I haven’t used to buy it at full price. I find you really need to find what works for you and your skin/hair type as the products, particularly the hair and skin products are very specific.

So to answer the question, if you can find something in Lush that works for you, it will always work for you and you will keep coming back for it. However a product that is totally wrong will most likely turn you off the whole place for quite a while. So take Lush with a grain of salt, not everything there will suit you, no matter how much the salesperson says it will.
